Über dieses Buch

This book is an up-to-date text on rubber science and is a breakthrough among many rubber-related publications. Emphasis is placed on the most modern scientific approaches to rubber science, departing from the usual detailed descriptions of trial-and-error results of traditional rubber technology. The book is a good introduction to modern rubber science both for graduate students and for more or less experienced rubber engineers for updating their way of thinking in handling of technological problems. Due to the increasing importance of pneumatic tires of vehicles and aircraft in modern transportation, this work will be of great use for general readers as well, including those who are concerned with sustainable development.

Frontmatter
Chapter 1. Introduction to Rubber Science
Abstract
Introduce some technical terms, such as Rubber, Elastomer, Materials, and Matters, and briefly described ideas, such as amorphous, glass-transition, and soft materials. Also, their significance for sustainable development is suggested.
Yuko Ikeda, Atsushi Kato, Shinzo Kohjiya, Yukio Nakajima
Chapter 2. Basic Science of Rubber
Abstract
The fundamentals of rubber science are described from the viewpoint of chemistry and physics. After general aspects are introduced briefly, topics specific to rubber are emphasized and their contribution to polymer science in general is carefully noted.
Yuko Ikeda, Atsushi Kato, Shinzo Kohjiya, Yukio Nakajima
Chapter 3. Materials Science of Rubber
Abstract
This is the main chapter on materials science of rubber and elastomer. It includes their physical propertier, developments to functionality materials, unique crystallization of natural rubber as template crystallization, and their reactive processing features leading to thermoplastic elastomers.
Yuko Ikeda, Atsushi Kato, Shinzo Kohjiya, Yukio Nakajima
Chapter 4. Recent Development of Rubber Science
Abstract
Recent progress in rubber science is explained on a few topics developed in this century. That is, reinforcement by nano-fillers is elucidated using the visualized filler networks constructed on the base 3D-TEM observations, rubber network structures analyzed by scattering and spectroscopic technique, and a new mechanism of the traditional vulcanization is described.
Yuko Ikeda, Atsushi Kato, Shinzo Kohjiya, Yukio Nakajima
Chapter 5. Pneumatic Tire Technology
Abstract
The pneumatic tire is a representative rubber product that has been crucial to the success of the automotive industry. A tire has four design elements: shape, construction, pattern, and material. Various aspects of tire performance are to be simultaneously satisfied by appropriately combining the four elements. In this chapter, a historical review relating to tires is given first, followed by discussions on engineering design of the four design elements. The future trend of tires is foretold based on the relationships between tire performances and tire design elements. Future tires may differ from currently available pneumatic tires in order to satisfy both the safety of all the relevant persons including the driver and the environmental performances (e.g., skid resistance, noise, rolling resistance and wear of tires). Development of the tires to be equipped to the future automobiles may necessitate a much deeper understanding of the technological phenomena even at nanometer levels.
Yuko Ikeda, Atsushi Kato, Shinzo Kohjiya, Yukio Nakajima
Chapter 6. Rubber Science and Technics Toward the Next Century: A Prospective View
Abstract
Rubber science has to be in harmony with the sustainable development idea, and is expected to accelerate further progress of rubber technics at the transportation society, too. In order to fulfill these objectives, modern rubber science is detined to make a paradigm shift during this century.
Yuko Ikeda, Atsushi Kato, Shinzo Kohjiya, Yukio Nakajima
