Summary
In order to obtain suitable approximate solutions of two-dimensional boundary problems by the Rayleigh-Ritz method frequently a great number of linear independent and admissible coordinate functions is required. They have to satisfy the essential boundary conditions of the variational problem and are expected to yield a well conditioned and rapidly built up set of linear equations for the undetermined constants in the Ritz minimising sequence. Our method to realize such demands is based on the solution of a two-dimensional interpolation problem. In the knots of a rectangular net the values of the function and of its partial derivatives up to a definite order are prescribed as the pivots of the interpolation. Above every singular mesh of the net polynomials of equal degree can be set up which take the pivots in the four corners and represent from one mesh to another above the whole net a smooth surface with continous partial derivatives up to a required order n. The (n + 1)2 pivots in every net-point are used as the undetermined constants in the Rayleigh-Ritz method and thus the solution of the boundary problem is approximated by tesselated polynomials of restricted degree.
