Effect of hemicellulose on the productivity of mercerizing units and viscose filterability

Conclusions

It has been shown that an increase in the hemicellulose content of the mercerizing alkali leads to an increase in the viscosity of the solution and the pressure in squeeze-out, and, correspondingly, to a decrease in the output of mercerizing units; and it also causes an impairment in viscose filterability.

The suggestion has been made that the impairment in viscose filterability is connected with a build-up of products from the oxidative degradation of hemicellulose.
