Abstract

Titanosilicate glass-ceramics designed for radioactive waste immobilization have been fabricated by a sol-gel route. Calcination and wet-milling, followed by drying, cold-pressing and sintering, produced material having very nearly the theoretical density. A maximum sintering temperature of 900° C was used, which is considerably less than the temperature of ⩾ 1300° C required for production by melting. The materials were characterized by differential thermal analysis, X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.
