Conclusions

The amount of retained austenite in steel 18KhGNMFL affects the contact fatigue strength of the carburized case after quenching from temperatures in the intercritical range and from temperatures above the upper critical point. In the first instance the amount of martensite also increases with the amount of retained austenite and the contact fatigue strength increases. In the second instance the larger quantity of retained austenite leads to a reduction of the percentage of martensite in the structure, lowering the contact fatigue strength.

The optima properties of the core are ensured by quenching steel 18KhGNMFL from 790°. Since the carbon content of the carburized case exceeds 0.8% at a depth of 0.3 mm, the case is quenched from the intercritical range, i. e., an increase in the amount of retained austenite in the surface layer after complete CTT does not lower the contact fatigue strength.
