Reaction between a punch electrode and a metal powder during electric discharge sintering

Soviet Powder Metallurgy and Metal Ceramics Aims and scope

Conclusions

  1. 1.

It has been established that in the EDS of low-melting-point metals and alloys infiltration of graphite punch electrodes by the metals and alloys is possible, resulting in marked adhesional reaction between the punch electrodes and parts being sintered.

  2. 2.

In the EDS of powders of carbide-forming metals, carbides of the metals being sintered frequently form in the contact zones between graphite punch electrodes and the powders, and welding of specimens to the punch electrodes occurs.

  3. 3.

It has been found that 3Kh2V8F steel punch electrodes can be successfully used for the EDS of comparatively low-melting-point metals (Al, Cu, Cu + Ni, and bronze). Reaction with parts being sintered can be minimized by applying to steel punch electrodes complex coatings of titanium and chromium carbides.
