Abstract
Using shape factors, the influence of fins within conducting solid layers with isothermal boundaries is determined. Geometric parameters are: the ratios fin pitch to layer thickness and fin height to layer thickness. — By con formal mapping the layer with thin fins is transformed into one without fins for which exact values of shape factors can be calculated. — Subdivision of the shape factor into one for the plane wall and one for a disturbance resulting from the fin, indicates the individual influences and allows application of the results to thick fins. The mutual exchange of adiabats and isotherms, the transformation of circular into rectangular arrangements and the possibility of symmetric subdivision of geometries extends the applicability of the results to a variety of geometries. — Comparison of experimentally determined shape factors with calculated yields differences of±6% at the most.
