Abstract

A non ionic surfactant with a rigid rod-like hydrophobic group has been synthesized. Owing to the molecular geometry of the surfactant only lamellar micelles are formed in aqueous solution.

This system exhibits a lyotropic nematic phase (N L), which for the first time has been found for a binary non ionic surfactant/water system.
