Abstract
The effect of nickel reduction on Ni/SiO2 catalysts with various metal loadings on the activity and thiotolerance during the selective ethylbenzene hydrogenation has been studied. It was found that in the presence of Ni2+ species, there exists an increase in thiotolerance, which is attributed to a selective trapping effect of these species for the thiophene molecules. 3–5 surface nickel atoms are affected by one thiophene molecule, indicating that thiophene adsorption is mainly coplanar with the surface.
