Summary
The applicability of mercury porosimetry for the determination of the pore size distribution in wood was investigated. Taking into consideration the characteristics of the porous structure of wood, additional devices first had to be developed in order to enlarge the measuring range and improve the accuracy of measurement of the mercury pressure porosimeter delivered by the industry: also a specific type of specimen was developed in order to eliminate errors of measurement involved with wood. The pore size distribution in structurally very different woods, such as beech, oak, bongossi, pine, and bamboo, and that in densified wood (lignostone) and in beech and pine wood soaked in polyethylene glycol was determined. According to the results, mercury porosimetry is equally well suited for the investigation of the porous structure of untreated wood, the determination of the influence of plastic deformation of the wood on its porous structure as well as for the investigation of the distribution of embedded materials in wood pores of greatly varying size.
