Abstract

Laboratory tests have confirmed that water entry by end-grain transmission is very rapid for sapwood of Scots pine, and significantly faster than found for the heartwood or for other softwood building timbers tested. Sealing the end-grain of the sapwood with either glues, resinous pretreatments or primers has been found to reduce water entry, though effectiveness of such sealers varies widely. As a class, the solvent-thinned wood primers have proved to be particularly effective as end-grain sealers. Natural exposure testing of L-joint samples has shown that in the absence of an end-grain sealer, the moisture content of painted Scots pine sapwood does not differ markedly from that of unpainted timber. In comparison, painted and end-grain sealed L-joints have shown much lower moisture contents and improved paint performance.
