Summary
The present study deals with several problems vesullting from the handling with paraffin conulsions used as anti-swelling agents. The structure and application of well-known anti-swelling agents are described, with special reference to the selection of favouable paraffin and wax mixtures and the emulsifying-agents used. The associated problems of heating-temperatures, pressing-times, hardener concentration, maturing-time, etc. are explained. Based on the results of an extensive laboratory test, the optimum amount of anti-swelling agent and the effect of paraffin on thickness swelling, ultimate transverse tensile strength, and bending strength were established. The results are shown in connection with tables and figures.
Another section deals with the application of paraffin emulsions in the extrusion process. Experience in the handling of paraffin emulsions in practice and the associated sources of error, as they may, for instance, occur with the formulation of the bonding-agent, are described. Brief reference is made to the effect of foreign substances, such as flameretardent agents in chipboard; finally the effect of the type of wood on thickness swelling is reported.
