Summary

The variability of soil mechanics parameters with inorganic salts (Na-, K-, Mg- and Ca-chloride) in different concentration were examined for three almost monomineralic clays (bentonite, illite, kaolin) and on clays with different mineralogical compositions (London Clay, Quick Clay).

The mineralogical-chemical tests consisted of the determination of the clay mineralogical composition, of the content of calcium carbonate and organic matter, of particular anions and cations, of the cation exchange capacity, and of the specific surface area. The soil mechanics behaviour was characterized by the study of the grain density, grain size distribution, ATTERBERG consistency limits, plasticity index, water absorption coefficient (ENSLIN test), stiffness and swelling modulus (oedometer test) and shear strength (direct shear test).
