Zusammenfassung
Überregionale Umweltbelastungen durch anthropogenen Schwermetalleintrag sind ein Phänomen, das sich nicht nur auf das Industriezeitalter beschränkt, sondern bereits seit mehr als tausend Jahren nachweisbar ist. Menschliche Skelettreste, die bei archäologischen Ausgrabungen aufgedeckt werden, bilden die einzige verfügbare. „Gewebeprobe”, welche Auskunft über die Schadstoffbelastung früher Bevölkerungen geben kann. Solche historische Betrachtungsweisen liefern die erforderlichen Basisdaten über die „natürlichen” Metallkonzentrationen im Skelett, an die der Organismus entwicklungsgeschichtlich adaptiert ist. Sie setzen gleichzeitig Maßstäbe für die Festlegung tolerierbarer Belastungen in der heutigen Zeit. Die bisher vorliegenden Ergebnisse legen nahe, angesichts möglicher kumulativer Effekte bei der Inkorporierung von Schadstoffen die Grenze der heute als „normal” eingeschätzten Schwermetallgehalte im menschlichen Körper deutlich niedriger anzusetzen.
