Abstract

The niobium-iron system is reinvestigated and a possible revised phase diagram is presented incorporating pertinent results of the previous investigators. Nb48Fe52 (Nb19Fe20) is found to crystallize in theμ-phase structure (W6Fe7-type). A Ti2Ni-type phase or aσ phase, reported in the literature, was not found to exist in the system. Small amounts of carbon, Aluminium or Silicon do not stabilize these phases. The Laves phase NbFe2 has a wide homogeneity range from 64 to 72 at % Fe. The possibility of considering the Laves phases as electron compounds closely related to theσ family is discussed.
