Born in Germany of Austrian parents, he grew up in northern Italy and Switzerland and survived in Ireland as a farmer during the Second World War. In 1946 he returned to Italy where he worked as a journalist. In 1962, he became director of a research project in computational linguistics sponsored and funded by the United States of America. From 1970, he taught cognitive psychology at the University of Georgia and retired in 1987. He is at present associate researcher at the Scientific Reasoning Research Institute of the University of Massachusetts. His most recent publications include Radical constructivism: a way of know-ing and learning (1995, also published in German, Portuguese, Korean and Italian, 1999).
