Abstract

The physical metallurgy of a precipitation hardenable stainless steel—17-4 PH—is reviewed. Electron micrographs are presented describing the microstructure of 17-4 PH as a function of aging time and temperature. Phase composition and X-ray diffraction data quantitatively relate lattice parameter, nonuniform microstrain, and austenite-ferrite ratio with heat treatment.
