Void nucleation during tensile deformation of a C-Mn structural steel

Abstract

Various methods have been used to reveal the voids arising from ductile fracture processes in a structural steel and the techniques compared. Using a series of the interrupted smooth bar tensile tests specimens were stopped at different plastic strains and nucleation was investigated. The material tested was a C-Mn structural steel with low sulphur content. The critical nucleation strain and the relative void volume at the critical nucleation strain were determined.
