Abstract
The type strain Fontaine ofClostridium thermoaceticum proliferated on H2/CO2 as energy source and was culturally adapted to grow on 100% CO in the headspace. The doubling times at 55°C on CO or H2/CO2 were 16 and 18 h, respectively. Under these conditions, the substrate-product transformation stoichiometries observed were: 4H2+2.1CO2→0.9 acetate and 4CO→2CO2+1.1 acetate. It is concluded thatC. thermoaceticum has a single carbon growth physiology.
