Abstract
The impact of the development of modern media affects psychoanalytic theory and practice just as much as social relationships and other areas of mental health. In particular, internet-based psychoanalytic treatment opens up an ambivalence between the doubts and criticisms of the use of new media in psychoanalysis. At the same time this topic is fascinating because it offers a multitude of new setting options. Instead of a one-sided discussion about the possibilities and limitations of online psychoanalysis, it would be more helpful to provide an empirically founded elucidation of the psychoanalytic process of internet communication. In this article the various interfaces between psychoanalysis and the internet are described. Furthermore, psychoanalytic thoughts about the impact of social media on the individual, relationships and the society are described. Current research findings as well as the current analytic practice of internet-based psychoanalytic treatment are presented. Finally, useful implications and practical recommendations for the psychoanalytic treatment are summarized, which focus on the statutory rules and ethical aspects as well as indications and contraindications for online sessions in running therapeutic procedures.
