Abstract

TiO2-based single-doped and codoped samples were synthesized by using the simple hydrothermal method by employing titanium sulfate as titania, cerium nitrate hexahydrate as cerium, and glucose as carbon precursors. Photocatalytic activities of the prepared catalysts were estimated by the degradation of acid orange 7 under visible light irradiation. Various analytical techniques were undertaken for the characterization of the catalysts such as X-ray diffraction, UV–Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy, etc. The photocatalytic activities of the prepared codoped samples were significantly increased as compared to the single-doped TiO2 due to a number of factors, such as decrease of the crystal size and increase of the surface area and surface hydroxyl groups, along with the decrease of the recombination of electrons and holes, etc., due to the synergistic effect of Ce and C codoping in TiO2.
