Abstract

This note underscores the need for more precise causal theories linking the international division of labor, national economies, and public policies. To that end, the author recommends two literatures upon which a revised dependency theory might build, namely, those on economic geography and the political economy of redistribution.

The literature on the “developmental state” in East Asia probably comes closest to fitting the bill, but with few exceptions (see Evans 1995 and Kohli 2004, for instance); it has been disinterested in generalizing beyond outcomes in a single region.

Data for developing countries is from the World Development Indicators 2008. The data for the West European countries comes from Iversen and Cusack (2000) and is for the year 1960.
