Notes on Astronium Jacq. (Anacardiaceae), including a dwarf new species from the Brazilian Shield

Abstract

A review of Astronium s.l. revealed a new species in section Astronium that is unusual because of its dwarf habit, presence of foliose bracts on the inflorescence, and sub-basal ovule placentation. Currently available collections suggest a disjunct distribution between the Brazilian states of Goiás and Rondônia and the northeastern part of the Bolivian department of Santa Cruz, but all on the Brazilian Shield. The new species is formally described and named as Astronium pumilum. The generic limits and morphological attributes of the sections of the genus are discussed, and a key to the known species is presented. A synopsis or revision of the genus is being prepared pending results from molecular systematic studies.

Uma revisão de Astronium s.l. revelou uma nova espécie pertencente à seção Astronium e que é atípica por ser uma planta anã com brácteas foliáceas na inflorescência e óvulos com placentação sub-basal. Coleções recentes desta espécie sugerem uma distribuição disjunta entre os estados de Goiás e Rondônia no Brasil, e a região nordeste do Departamento de Santa Cruz na Bolívia, mas todas no Escudo Brasileiro. Esta espécie nova é descrita e nomeada aqui como Astronium pumilum. Uma discussão sobre os limites e as principais características diagnósticas das seções de Astronium, bem como uma chave de identificação para as espécies, são apresentadas. Uma sinopse ou revisão taxonômica do gênero está sendo preparada, enquanto aguarda-se os resultados dos estudos de sistemática molecular.
