Abstract
Eye tracking has been one of the most insight-gaining methods in advertising research for many decades. The vast developments in eye tracking techniques (hard- and software) and the emergence of neuromarketing a couple of years ago have to quite some extent accounted for the rising interest in eye tracking in marketing research these days. Eye-tracking is an implicit method to measure the effectiveness of ads, commercials and other visual marketing stimuli. Eye tracking provides objective measures for an ad’s or a commercial’s effectiveness in terms of when, how often and how long certain aspects of an ad have been fixated. It also provides answers why important elements (e.g. brand) have not captured the consumer’s attention. Whereas eye tracking has already been used for a long time in print advertising research, the analysis of dynamic stimuli such as commercials has not been able until a few years ago. Based on psychophysiological and neurological theory this article gives a review of eye tracking metrics which are essential to analyse and interpret eye tracking data. The results of two eye tracking studies for print advertisements in the Yellow Pages and for commercials demonstrate the great potential of eye tracking for identifying factors which are able to boost an ad’s or a commercial’s effectiveness.
