Abstract

A rapid and simple method of estimating starch in wood is described which is suitable for carrying out large numbers of determinations.

Résumé

Une méthode rapide et simple est décrite pour le dosage de l'emidon dans le bois. Ce procédé convient a des analyses en série.

Zusammenfassung

In the next step, the particles size was measured and expressed in micrometer (μm) units. Determination of oil palm starch content was carried out by using method stated in previous work by other researcher [29]. Approximately 0.4 g of the oil palm starch powder was weighed and transferred to 50 mL centrifuge test tube.

Holocellulose content of the samples was carried out based on the procedure described by Wise [14] while alpha cellulose content was measured by the extraction of the cellulose with 17.5 sodium hydroxide. Lignin and starch content of the particles were also determined based on TAPPI 222-02 [15] and the method described by Humphreys and Kelly, respectively [16]. Bending properties, modulus of rupture (MOR) and internal bond (IB) strength of the samples were tested on Instron Testing System Model UTM-5582 equipped with a load cell having a capacity of 1000 kg.

The peak at cm−1 corresponds to intermolecular hydrogen bonding and C–H stretching [31]. Starch content of the samples was carried out using a method based on Humphreys and Kelly [32]. Starch content in percentage (%) value of binderless composite panels from different particle geometry with different steam exposure conditions are presented in Table 3.

The methods of quantitative chemical analysis are described by Rabemanolontsoa et al. (2011). Protein content was quantified by the Kjeldahl method using a nitrogen factor of 6.25 (AOAC Official Method, 2001; Thiex et al., 2002), and starch content through colorimetry according to Humphreys and Kelly (1961). Its inorganic constituents were quantified by incinerating the sample into ash in a muffle furnace at 600 °C for 4 h.

The method developed by Yemm and Willis (1954) was applied to determine the sugar content. Also total starch was investigated using Humphreys and Kelly (1961) method. The tensile strength test was conducted according to ASTM D885 (1995) using an Instron Universal Testing Machine (Instron: Model 3365) with cell load capacity 5 kN, at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min.
