Abstract

Texas experience suggests that amateur naturalists will be heavily involved in preliminary ecological surveys of natural areas, hence a simple key for identification of community-types is presented. Line intercept transects are suggested for amateur use in providing standardised quantitative data on the physiognomy of natural areas. A scheme for the evaluation of each area utilises the weighted values of climax condition, educational suitability, species significance, community representation, and human impact through multiplicative scoring to give a natural area score. With the weighted values-multiplicative scoring scheme, natural areas are clearly distinguished in priority for acquisition.

The indicators were used to understand the two aspects of cognitive attraction (For further explanation and questionnaire results see Section 4 of the Supplementary Material). Multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) methods are frequently used to evaluate forest owners’ preferences and non-monetary forest attributes in landscape planning problems (i.e. Gehlbach, 1975; Munda, 2000; Herath and Prato, 2006). In this study, the trade-offs between indicator and optimization of the landscape management were both modeled using the “portfolio of landscape management scenarios” MCDA approach proposed by Mönkkönen et al. (2014).

We also found higher acquisition rates in 1970s, not of new land-cover types, but more area of each land-cover type. This is the era of modern environmentalism, and also the era in which the first assessments of what had been conserved to date and what was missing were done (Gehlbach, 1975; Rabe & Savage, 1979). Early conservation assessments may explain why this push to acquire more land, which also coincides with three policies that created more funds for land acquisition, allowed for more direct negotiations with private land owners about land conservation.
