Abstract

The paper describes the development and testing of a cyclone type husk fired furnace which can be used either for heating the drying air or for generating steam in a boiler for parboiling of paddy in the rice mill. Measurements were made of furnace efficiency at various husk feed rates and air flow rates. The highest furnace efficiency obtained was 80% at a husk feed rate of 20 kg/h and air flow rate of 168 m3/h. The temperature of the flue gas varied from 150° to 1000°C at various husk feed rates and air flow rates. The flue gas analysis indicated that maximum heat release occurred when the furnace was supplied with 110% excess air over that needed for complete combustion.

This type of reactor is an extension of a muffle furnace to support a better degree of mixing and overcome the problems of non-homogeneity and is distinguished by the benefits of its continuous operation and high production capacity (Rozainee et al., 2008). The potential limitations of this technique are the long reaction time and energy-intensiveness (Singh et al., 1980). An inclined grate furnace is another common type set at some slope (usually at 30°) from the horizontal.

This research showed that the optimised secondary air for combustion ranged from 0.035 to 0.05 m3 s−1 corresponding to the husk feeding and drying air flow rates. The excess air coefficient at this optimised point was 2.7 (±0.18), in agreement with those mentioned by Braunbeck [23] and also close to the range of excess air ratio revealed in other research [17,22,32]. CO is an important component in flue gas not only reflecting the combustion performance but also adversely affecting human health [33].

The box-type furnace does not work appropriately for settling ashes as the furnace with cylindrical chamber and center pipe [122]. In the cyclonic furnace designed and tested by Singh et al. [123] husk and air were introduced tangentially to the cyclone chamber. The air kept the husk rotating in circular motion and accelerated combustion in the chamber.
