Abstract

The catalytic influence of polyaniline (PANI) film, prepared from sulphuric and perchloric acid solutions, on hydroquinone/benzoquinone (HQBQ) and Fe2+3+ reactions has been investigated. The effect of the PANI layer thickness on redox reactions has been established, as well as different kinetics depending on the counter-ion incorporated. The location of the reactions taking place is discussed. Evidence is given for metal-like behaviour of PANI at potentials of emeraldine existence and redox-polymer behaviour at potentials of pemigraniline existence.

As the thickness of PANI film increases, the anodic peaks shifted in the oxidation peaks and the cathodic peaks shifted to the reduction peaks. Moreover, the separation between respective anodic and cathodic peaks increased due to diffusion resistance in the film and some kinetic irreversibility [37,38]. This disparity could also be explained by higher electric conductivity and shorter ionic paths of the thinner PANI file [39].
