Abstract

The origin of the visible luminescence from porous Si is argued in terms of a quantum well picture including a spectrum of Si-related states localized on the surface. We give evidence for the existence of such states and consider their role in the light emission process. We relate the observations of luminescence in porous Si to those for amorphous Si while pointing out characteristics differences.

Other researchers have demonstrated PL with various ligands and surface chemistries [13]. Surface defects on PSi also play an important role in the emission by generating new energy levels lower than the conduction band or higher than the valence band [14,15]. In many previous studies, various transition metals have been used to improve the luminescence of PSi.
