Abstract

A method of utilising the porous wet gel as a matrix into which reactants could be diffused and subsequently precipitated, was applied. It was assumed that the size of the pores and their distribution through the gel would control both the size and distribution of the precipitates. In these preparations, acid catalysed tetramethoxysilane solutions were hydrolysed and polymerised either via the conventional solvent route, using alcohols to provide the miscibility or via the solventless ultrasonic route. Once the gels were formed, the various reactants, for example cadmium, selenium and sulphur, were diffused into the gel in a suitable salt form. Reactions occurred within the gel host resulting in the production of precipitates. The ratio of Cd:Se:S in the resulting precipitates could be altered by varying the three salt concentrations.
