Abstract

The high temperature deformation behaviour in tensile tests has been studied on fine-grained α-Ti alloys containing 1–7 mol.% Al at around 1100 K with a strain rate ranging from 3 × 10−6 to 1 × 10−2 s−1. The general behaviour is essentially the same as that observed in f.c.c. and b.c.c. solid solution alloys. Steady state deformation characteristics are well represented by a Dorn-type equation with two sets of parameters. These sets for high and low stress ranges correspond to those of regions H and M respectively in AlMg alloys. The activation energy Qc of creep, which equals about 280 kJ mol−1, is obviously larger than that for diffusion. This result is the only significant difference between α-TiAl alloys and other cubic alloys.
