Energetics of the Solid Earth: Implications for the Structure of Mantle Convection
2023, Dynamics of Plate Tectonics and Mantle ConvectionPlume-lithosphere interaction at craton margins throughout Earth history
2018, TectonophysicsCitation Excerpt :Mantle plumes are a vital part of the Earth system and have been operating since the solidification of the Earth's magma ocean in the Hadean (Nebel et al., 2014; Valley et al., 2014; Yokochi and Marty, 2005), and possibly earlier (Elkins-Tanton, 2012; Solomatov, 2000). They transport material from the core mantle boundary (CMB) and transition zone regions of the mantle (Stacey and Loper, 1983; Zhao, 2001) to the surface environment (Brandon et al., 1998; Hanan and Graham, 1996; Torsvik et al., 2010; Walker et al., 1995), re-fertilise the mantle via recycling of subducted material (Hoernle et al., 2006; Lassiter and Hauri, 1998; Sobolev et al., 2007; Sobolev et al., 2000; Sobolev et al., 2011), and drive supercontinent breakup (Dalziel et al., 2000; Sleep, 1997; Storey, 1995). Plumes may have important effects on the crust by driving melting of the lower crust and mantle lithosphere (Burov et al., 2007; Davies, 1994; Molnar and Jones, 2004; Olson et al., 1988), delamination (Burov and Cloetingh, 2010) and continental growth (McCulloch and Bennett, 1994).
