Abstract

High molecular weight film-forming semicrystalline aromatic polyketones with a regular structure were obtained by precipitation electrophilic Friedel-Crafts polycondensation of 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid chloride with diphenyl ether, 1,4-bis(p-phenoxy) benzophenone and 1,4-bis(p-phenoxybenzoyl) benzene. Using 1H and 13C n.m.r. spectroscopy, the polyketones obtained were shown to be linear with para-substituted arylene fragments in the main chain. These polymers are soluble in strong protic acids and in common organic solvents, such as dichloroacetic acid and CHCl3/CF3CO2H mixtures. Depending on the chemical structure, these ‘as-made’ polyketones were found to show multiple melting behaviour on heating.

This material may find application in selective laser sintering (SLS) since its thermal properties are very similar to that of nylon-12, which is commonly used. The synthesis of naphthalene containing PAEKs have been reported, including by a precipitation method [23], and a gel process [24], so modification of the aromatic monomer alone was attempted with the dispersion process. A dispersion polymerisation was carried out with a monomer feed containing naphthalene-2,6-diylbis((4-phenoxyphenyl)methanone) (EKNKE) and TPC (Scheme 7), and this produced particulate polymer, visually comparable in size to PEKK dispersions, with 0.99 dL·g−1.

It is believed that polymer precipitation in polycondensation synthesis stops macromolecular chain growth reaction. However, it turned out that under certain conditions polymer-forming reaction continue in the precipitate yielding high-molecular-weight polymers [23,24]. The precipitate in the form of swollen aggregated particles appeared in the polymerizations of fluorinated ketones with p-quaterphenyl.

Synthesis of PEEK is divided into two reaction categories, of which one is nucleophilic aromatic substitution and another is Friedel–Crafts acylation [30]. The Friedel–Crafts acylation polymerization proceeds with precipitating polymers [31], and the powders having various morphologies had been obtained so far [32–35]. The solvent for this polymerization cannot be selected widely because it should dissolve not only monomers but also aluminum chloride, and hence 1,2-dichloroethane and nitrobenzene are commonly used.
