Effective ionic charges in CdGa2Se4 and CdGa2S4

Abstract

Available experimental data (Raman and Infrared) on the optic phonon spectra in defect chalcopyrite crystals CdGa₂Se₄ and CdGa₂S₄ are used to determine the dynamical ionic effective charges. The results are compared with those found in other ternary compounds as spinels and chalcopyrites. An emperical correlation between the normalized Szigeti charges and the optical dielectric constant is discussed.

Lattice dynamical calculations on compounds crystallizing in a thiogallate-type structure

Lattice dynamical calculations for thiogallate-type compounds A Ga₂X₄ with A = Cd or Hg, and X = S or Se have been performed on the basis of a short-range force constant model. Discrepancies in the experimental frequencies and crystal structures reported for these compounds in the literature by different groups are discussed with respect to the short-range force constants and potential energy distributions resulting from our calculations.
The evaluation of the Scott effective charge in binary and chalcopyrite compounds

The objective of this work was to establish a new empirical procedure by which charges in crystals can be calculated. The analysis of the Scott effective charge is performed on the basis of the additivity rule. The method is applied to a number of series composed of binary compounds to prove its validity. At the same time the procedure is used to calculate the anion charge in various chalcopyrite compounds. These charges are discussed in relation to other literature values.
