Abstract

An investigation of the K-edge absorption properties of iron and cobalt in high oxidation states and in regular (Oh) or slightly distorted (D4h octahedral oxygen coordination has been carried out. It is shown that small distortions of the absorbing atom environment result in a broadening of the splitting of the main absorption line, depending on the magnitude of the distortion. A careful analysis of the corresponding EXAFS spectra allows to specify quantitatively the qualitative information obtained from the XANES region.
