Abstract

The principle of a three-dimensional molecular memory is outlined. Initial experiments aimed at understanding the transfer of electrons between the layers of a Langmuir-Blodgett multilayer are described.

Microscopic detection of light-induced electron transfer in molecular assembly system using scanning Maxwell stress microscopy (SMM)

Scanning Maxwell stress microscopy (SMM), a type of scanning probe microscope capable of imaging the distribution of surface potential over the sample surface, was used to investigate the light induced electron transfer from cyanine dye to viologen moieties embedded in hetero-type Langmuir–Blodgett films. We could observe the light induced surface potential changes upon laser light illumination. Further, the direction of the changes was in accordance with that of the light induced electron transfer in hetero-type LB films.
Specific photoresponses of Langmuir-Blodgett films containing organized chromophores

Various redox chromophores were highly organized in Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films to show specific photoresponses such as colour changes due to photoinduced electron transfer (photoinduced electrochromism), anisotropic orientation of photogenerated radicals, molecular control of photocurrents, and dispersive deactivation of excited triplet states. Colour changes due to the photoinduced electron transfer reaction and molecular control of photogenerated radicals were achieved in LB films. Photoinduced electrochromism of a single monolayer LB film in amphiphilic 4,4′-bipyridinium was successfully detected by the optical waveguide (OWG) method. Transient absorption upon excitation of amphiphilic porphyrin in LB films with a nanosecond laser of 532 nm was also sensitively detected by this method. The excited triplet porphyrin decayed with a dispersive process in LB films indicating inhomogeneous distribution of chromophores. Anisotropic photoconduction and its molecular control were achieved in LB films.
Molecular control of photoresponses of LB films containing redox chromophores

Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing redox chromophores such as 4,4′-bipyridinium, carbazole, aUoxazine, porphyrin, and Ru(II)-bipyridine complexes showed variousphotoresponsesincludingphotoinducedelectrochromism, photocurrents, amplified fluorescence quenching, or photochemical modulation of second harmonic generation.The molecular control of these photoresponses in LB films was successfully achieved by controlling the moleculararrangements, molecular orientation, and/or the extent of aggregation of redox chromophores. The relationship between the structure of organized redox chromophores and the photochemical or photophysical properties will be discussed.
Photoelectric characteristics of Langmuir-Blodgett films containing a mixture of amphiphilic porphyrin and arachidic acid deposited from two solid condensed phases

Surface monolayers of mixtures of amphiphilic porphyrin and arachidic acid showed two solid condensed phases above and below about 30 mN m⁻¹. Steady photocurrents were measured for Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited at 50 mN m⁻¹ and 20 mN m⁻¹. These films gave similar action spectra of steady photocurrents corresponding to porphyrin absorption. More than ten times higher photocurrents were observed for LB films prepared at 50 mN m⁻¹ (film A) as compared with those at 20 mN m⁻¹ (film B) at zero bias voltages, whereas absorbance of the former was about twice that of the latter. Steady photocurrents at 560 nm of film A were much larger than those of film B, irrespective of applied voltage and molar fractions of porphyrins. These results strongly suggest that the perpendicular intermolecular tunneling rate of amphiphilic porphyrins in film A is much higher than that in film B due to loosely stacked porphyrins in the LB films prepared from the solid condensed phase at higher surface pressures.
Scanning tunneling microscopic observations of commensurate crystalline structures for horizontally deposited cadmium stearate bilayers on graphite

Bilayers of cadmium stearate have been assembled on graphite substrates using a horizontal deposition method and imaged in air using a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). STM images of these bilayers, acquired at a series of tunneling currents, allow the position of the tip with respect to the graphite surface to be deduced. During STM imaging at small tunneling currents, these measurements indicate that the tip is located ca. 50 Å from the graphite surface, or approximately at the surface of the stearate bilayer (which is 50 Å in thickness). STM imaging with larger tunneling currents (up to 6 nA) caused the STM tip to move closer to the graphite surface (and therefore into the stearate bilayer) at steady-state. In the specific case of Cd stearate bilayers, these measurements indicate that “non-perturbative” STM imaging conditions, which cause no detectable penetration of the stearate bilayer by the STM tip, are readily accessible at low currents. Under these STM imaging conditions, the structure of condensed-phase stearate bilayers has been investigated at molecular resolution using constant average height mode data acquisition and fast scan frequencies in excess of 80 Hz. STM images of stearate bilayers consist of regular arrays of high-tunneling-current vertices, which are arranged in either of two types of lattices: centered rectangular (CR) or rectangular (R). Regions of these bilayers composed of mixed R and CR unit cells are also observed. Two-dimensional Fourier analysis of the STM data reveals that the hexagonal periodicity of the graphite substrate and the less symmetric lattice of the fatty acid salt are simultaneously visible. These data enable the registry of the fatty acid layer with respect to the graphite lattice to be accurately determined, and this analysis reveals that both the R and the CR lattices are commensurate.
Maxwell displacement current across single monolayers

An electrical technique that allows reorganization of single monolayers to be probed by measuring the Maxwell displacement current flowing across monolayers is described. The Maxwell displacement current is generated from single monolayers with the application of an external stimulus (e.g. pressure, light or heat) in the absence of an external electric field. The current across octadecylamine monolayers with thermal stimulation is given as an example of the Maxwell displacement currents.
