Abstract

Amphiphilic calix[4]resorcinolarenes (C[4]RA) with different hydrocarbon chains have been synthesized. The self-assembling properties of the C[4]RA molecules on the water surface were studied by Π-A and φ-A diagram measurements. Langmuir-Blod-gett (LB) films of these compounds were produced. Complexing properties of C[4]RA LB films were investigated by the quartz-crystal balance method and ellipsometry. Different adsorption mechanisms were found for water and aromatic molecules.

This has allowed determining the approximate depth of rapid water penetration within these potential sensor materials, and overcoming the limited temporal resolution of the used device. When ellipsometry measurements are combined with other techniques, in particular with the QCM or electrochemical methods, often gold-coated quartz crystals are used [41–44]. A gold film of 200 nm can already be treated as bulk for light in the visible range.

For our glass surfaces, the equilibrium contact angle of Milli-Q water on activated glass surface was measured as 3° ± 1° while for the glass coated with the calix[4]arene, calix[6]arene and calix[8]arene molecules the measured contact angles of water drop were 80.18° ± 1.3°, 84.65° ± 1.5° and 89.9° ± 0.8°, respectively. We envisage that these increases attributed to the ascending alkyl groups of calix[n]arenes [23]. Fig. 5 shows AFM images for the calix[n]arene with the characteristics of LB films transferred from water subphase, revealing the nanometric structure of the films.
