Abstract

Fe17.5Cr alloys have been grown on chemically polished silicon using co-sputter deposition with and without the use of 200 eV argon ion assistance during deposition. Thin film glancing incidence X-ray analysis was then used to characterise the microstructure of the film. As expected for the co-sputter deposited film (grown without ion-assistance) the d-spacings corresponded closely to those of ferritic stainless steel (Fe18Cr) which has a bcc Fe structure. Surprisingly however, the film deposited using ion assistance had a structure of a metastable chi-phase, similar to that of α-manganese. Normally large impurity species are considered essential for the stabilisation of this structure. The possible reasons for the formation of the chi-phase are discussed in terms of the effects of the ion assistance on film growth.

Subsequent tests in our biology lab over several weeks in a solution of equivalent mouth saliva showed that nickel content was safe up to 90% content and leached out above that level; a result much easier and quicker to obtain than by casting and testing a series of metals. It is also worth mentioning that, for all ion-surface work there is a dependence of sputtering coefficient on ion dose [57] and in other work on Ion beam techniques for materials modification [58–61] which may need to be taken into account. The grain size is 5–10 nm as-grown (Fig. 6). Simmonds et al. reported the formation of the α-Mn structure in Cr17.5Fe82.5 grown by ion-assisted cosputter deposition; without the ion assistance, the film grows with the bcc structure [8]. We find that compositions surrounding Cr17Fe49Ni34 grow in a mixture of the α-Mn, fcc, and σ-FeCr structures, with no ion assist.
