2020, Vision ResearchCitation Excerpt :However, for luminance patches, Michelson contrast resulted in an imbalance in perceived contrast: decrement stimuli had greater perceived contrast than increment stimuli that were an equal distance from mid-level grey. Whittle’s Contrast scale linearizes the luminance decrement scale and indicates which luminance increments and decrements are perceived as equal in contrast (Whittle, 1986; 1992). Eleven levels of luminance were thus defined, as midlevel gray, and with five levels of increment and five levels of decrement.
