Pan and co-workers [22–25] were able to develop a semi-analytical approach by combining the conformal mapping and the integral equation methods. Under gravitational stress only, they found that beneath irregular, asymmetric valleys and ridges, there can be several locations of local stress maxima and minima which could be potential locations of rock failure [22,24].

The numerical results performed using f = d = 3000 m (Fig. 10a) match well the semi-analytical solutions devised by Pan et al. (1995). In the near-surface region, the topographic effect makes the stress different from the half-space solution, while at greater depth this effect vanishes and the stress approaches that expected from the half-space model.
