Abstract

Because the surface finish depends on the value and shape of manufacturing errors in 3-D NC machining of a free-formed surface with a cylindrical flat-end mill, engineers are interested in methods to reduce manufacturing errors and to find better tool paths in order to obtain a good surface finish. In this paper, two kinds of manufacturing errors are defined: zigzag and terraced manufacturing errors. This paper also presents the mathematical conditions for both kinds of error as well as formulas for calculating them. An approach is described that applies the manufacturing errors to select proper tool paths to obtain a better surface finish.
