Neural correlates of response bias: Larger hippocampal volume correlates with symptom aggravation in combat-related posttraumatic stress disorder
2018, Psychiatry Research - NeuroimagingCitation Excerpt :High or diffuse scores of psychopathology and poor symptom discrimination, which are often used to identify simulation or exaggeration, may be genuine in PTSD (Frueh et al., 2000,1997). It has been found that distinguishing credible PTSD patients from malingerers based solely on high symptom scores is likely to falsely label combat-related PTSD as simulated (Bagby et al., 1994; Berry et al., 1991). False negative identification of malingering may also occur, as a diagnosis of PTSD is dependent entirely on self-report symptoms, symptom checklists are readily available and the majority of PTSD scales do not include validity checks.
Methods for the detection of carelessly invalid responses in survey data
2016, Journal of Experimental Social PsychologyCitation Excerpt :There are many potential causes of invalid data in general research. Invalid data on high-stakes tests and surveys, due to the valuable nature of these measures (e.g., clinical assessment and personnel selection), have been studied in depth for many decades (e.g., Berry, Baer, & Harris, 1991; Birkeland, Manson, Kisamore, Brannick, & Smith, 2006; Butcher, Dahlstrom, Graham, Tellegen, & Kaemmer, 1989; Dunnette, McCartney, Carlson, & Kirchner, 1962; Orpen, 1971). Researchers who study faking and cheating have the benefit that these behaviors are only manifested in very specific ways.
