Abstract

Two-dimensional arrays of micrometer-scale thin square slabs of amorphous Sm0.2Co0.8 were prepared by means of e-beam lithography and dc sputtering. When a laser beam is Bragg-diffracted by this structure, under transverse magneto-optical-Kerr effect geometry, the intensities of the various diffracted beams have very different variations as a function of applied magnetic field. The diffraction hysteresis loops provided by the various Bragg-diffracted beams yield information about the average domain structure of the individual particles.

Diffraction features can also be modulated by an external magnetic field. The diffracted magneto-optic Kerr effect (D-MOKE), which is a transverse magneto-optical Kerr effect for a reflected diffraction beam from a magnetic metal grating, has recently attracted much attention [8,9]. Because the effect can be estimated accurately using the Rayleigh perturbation approximation [10,11], the D-MOKE is an interesting tool to investigate magnetization information and dynamics.

In contrast, Bragg-MOKE uses the periodic array of the magnetic features illuminated by a broad incident beam and the hysteresis loops are recorded at different orders of diffraction in off-specular geometry. For ferromagnetic line gratings, the combination of diffraction and the magneto-optical Kerr effect yields information about the mean lateral magnetization distribution [3] and can also be used to change the sign and the amplitude of the MOKE signal [13,11]. This technique comes to a natural limit as the spacing between the individual magnetic islands surpasses the wavelength of the incident light.
