Abstract

We provide a problem oriented review of multiple criteria decision research. We focus on classifying multiple criteria decision making problems, and discussing how decision makers can be assisted (supported) in structuring and solving such problems. We do not review existing multiple criteria procedures, but do provide references to relevant software systems implementing such procedures for the computer. Both discrete alternative and continuous mathematical programming multiple objective problems are discussed. We conclude the paper by identifying exciting directions and promising areas for continued and future research in multiple criteria decision support.

Decision-making processes can be facilitated by software tools that allow interactive model building, exploration, and visualization of results. Accordingly, MCDA approaches have often been developed in tandem with respective decision support software (see Korhonen et al., 1992 for an early review). Especially group decision support has a tradition of technology-driven approaches (Morton et al., 2003).

      Citation Excerpt :

MCDM involves establishing a global preference relationship for a range of alternatives that are evaluated using a variety of criteria. The purpose of any MCDM technique is to assist and guide DM in discovering the most desired solution to the problem (Korhonen et al., 1992). Thus, many types of MCDM techniques have been developed by researchers.
