Abstract

This paper is a review of low-velocity impact responses of composite materials. First the term ‘low-velocity impact’ is defined and major impact-induced damage modes are described from onset of damage through to final failure. Then, the effects of the composite's constituents on impact properties are discussed and post-impact performance is assessed in terms of residual strength.

A machine learning-enabled prediction of damage properties for fiber-reinforced polymer composites under out-of-plane loading

For understanding the damage morphology in fiber-reinforced plastics under out-of-plane loading, engineers/ and designers mostly rely on experimental investigations and numerical models, which could be costly in terms of resources and computational requirements. Thus, pragmatic predictive approaches that can offer ready-to-use tools for material optimization have gained traction in recent years. This paper proposes a machine learning model, developed with the use of previous experiments, to predict the damage behaviour of E-glass fiber-reinforced plastics in sandwich structures and laminates. The focus is on quasi-static indentation with different indenter geometries, using acoustic signals for damage monitoring. A total of 10 optimal-performing regression algorithms were employed to develop the prediction models. The developed models based on total energy gave acceptable results for all specimens (R-squared value: 0.9932 – 0.9999), while prediction models using force produced less accurate results (R-squared value: 0.8693) for a sandwich structure subjected to a conical indenter. Results showed that energy absorption of composites provided the most reliable data for the development of predictive models. The load profiles could also be used when the contact area is limited (e.g., for hemispherical and conical indenters). The best-performing model for higher surface areas of the indenter increased was k-NN, thanks to its ability to capture complex and nonlinear relationships between the input features and the target variable. Overall, the developed model could provide more autonomy and control for the material optimisation of composite structures for industrial applications with reduced time and cost constraints.
Experimental and numerical investigation on the compression after high-velocity impact behavior of composite laminates

Considering the differences in damage mechanism between high-velocity impact (HVI) and low-velocity impact (LVI), this study conducted HVI tests and compression-after-impact (CAI) tests to reveal the post-impact compression behavior of laminates manufactured by unidirectional prepreg tape and exposed a completely different mechanical response in residual strength compared to that of LVI. By controlling the impact velocity within the range of 200 m/s ̃ 380 m/s, three kinds of impact results were obtained, including un-penetrated and penetrated conditions. Different CAI damage morphologies can be observed in these laminates. In order to fully understand the CAI damage mechanism induced by different HVI events, a surface-based cohesive behavior and a CDM intralaminar damage model were implemented. In addition, a more complete picture of the compression behavior after HVI was observed through the simulation results, which is of great help in estimating the residual strength of post-impact laminates. However, the HVI damage was introduced through the spherical steel projectiles, and the sample size was determined based on ASTM D7137, which might be different factors from the application conditions.
GLARE laminate subjected to multiple oblique low velocity impacts considering frictional tangential compliance

The impacts occurring in real scenarios can be arbitrary, simultaneously impacting at different trajectories, giving rise to complexity in analysing the impact phenomena. This necessitates the implementation of a robust numerical finite element (FE) model capable of modelling such multiple impacts. The present paper investigates the multiple oblique low velocity impacts (OLVIs) on a clamped GLARE plate by spherical impactors exploring the influence of obliquity and their relative trajectories as well as the time delay between the OLVIs on the impact response and the extent of interfacial delamination. A 3D FE code has been developed considering the Hertzian contact model for modelling the normal component of contact and the theory of Mindlin and Deresiewicz is used for modelling tangential component considering friction. Results show that in addition to the obliquity of the impactors and the coefficient of friction, their relative trajectories, sizes and instant of their occurrences significantly influence the contact force histories, contact durations and the delamination at the interfaces.
Cylindrical single-wall and double-wall structures with or without internal water subjected to underwater shock loading

A series of experimental studies were conducted for cylindrical structures subjected to underwater shock loading to understand their dynamic responses and failure characteristics. All tests were performed inside an anechoic water tank. The submerged test cylinders were freely suspended, and an underwater shock loading was generated by the Compressed Air Shock Pipe Underwater Release (CASPUR) system. Cylinders were made of two different materials. The first group of cylinders was fabricated from carbon fiber and resin using the filament winding technique. The winding angles were ± 45° resulting in the same properties along axial and hoop directions. The second group of cylinders was constructed using a 3-D printer with polylactic acid (PLA) material. The 3-D printed cylinders had an orthotropic material property with different values in the axial and hoop directions. Both single-wall and double-wall cylindrical structures were tested. The latter consisted of two concentric cylinders of different diameters with uniform spacing between them. In addition, within the single-wall cylinders and the annuli of double-wall cylinders, the water fill was varied at 0%, 50%, or 100%. Pressure and strain gages were used to measure the shock pressure and deformation of the cylinders. The number of cylinders such as single-wall or double-wall and the internal water resulted in significant effects on the measured dynamic response (i.e., strain gage response) as well as the failure loading and failure characteristics including major failure locations. Internal water reduced the strain on the cylinders and made them withstand greater shock loading for both single-wall and double-wall cylinders.
Effect of fibre hybridization and stacking sequence on the low velocity impact response of flax/basalt/aluminum composite-metal joints

A lot of composite materials with better impact resistance and better strength and stiffness can be manufactured these days. Many researchers have been using different materials to form new composites to understand their impact performance. This paper discusses such an attempt to make new composites by utilizing the concept of hybridization and then proposes which among them has better strength and performance under low-velocity impact (LVI) loading. In this work, circular patches of composites made up of a combination of basalt and flax fibers were used while being bonded with aluminum plate Al 2024-T3 of 3 mm thickness. The three different configurations which include asymmetric, symmetric, and sandwich were prepared using vacuum assisted bagging process and their impact performances were investigated using the Drop Weight Impact test. The results obtained were analyzed and they concluded that the asymmetric configuration of basalt/flax composite has better impact resistance, and strength and is better to use in structural components of automobiles, and the defense industry as compared to the other two.
Low velocity impact and compression-after-impact response of hybrid pseudo-woven meso-architectured carbon/epoxy composite laminates manufactured via automated fiber placement

An experimental study is presented on the low velocity impact (LVI) and compression after impact (CAI) response of T800-SC carbon/epoxy laminates manufactured via automated fiber (AFP) placement manufacturing. Two hybrid laminate configurations consisting of unidirectional and pseudo-woven meso-architectured composite (MAC) sub-laminates are compared against a traditional quasi-isotropic control laminate. MAC sub-laminates are manufactured via a modified AFP process implementing tow skips. The MAC architecture is macroscopically heterogeneous with discontinuous and spatially varying fiber orientations both in-plane and through thickness resulting in multiple interfaces and an expanded design space. The laminates are tested under LVI energies of 15–55 J using a 25.4 mm diameter hemispherical projectile according to ASTM D7136. The results show similar load-displacement responses but significant difference in the LVI damage profiles and CAI strengths for the different configurations. The hybrid laminate configurations exhibit increased damage resistance with up to 37% higher critical delamination load and increased damage tolerance with 26% higher residual compressive strength after an impact of 55 J compared to control laminate.
