Publisher Summary

Management's active demonstration of leadership is the key to the success of any safety management system. This chapter describes several ways of providing visible leadership and summarizes several management leadership traits. The chapter includes the description of a management system that protects contract employees from hazards and prevents them from endangering employees of the owner company. Successful top management uses a variety of techniques that visibly involve them in the safety aspects of an organization. The keystone at the top of the arch represents management commitment and leadership, and the rest of the arch is the management program that must be integrated into the system. If the system does not work in the way it is intended, it fails. Demonstration of commitment provides the management with the motivating force and the needed resources to manage safety for developing an effective process. The “walk-around” management style is a very effective method. Its use indicates that the manager is concerned about the safety of the employees. Meetings such as safety meetings and scheduled meetings can also be used as management tools. The chapter illustrates several components of the safety management system and management actions.
