Advanced Pulse Discriminating System for EDM Process Analysis and Control

For many years, spark-erosion processes have often been analysed and controlled by real time detection and evaluation of discharges in the gap. Mostly, normal sparks, short circuits, arcs and open circuits were distinguished; few systems had more advanced features like discharge voltage noise detection facilities, particular arc type detections, etc.

However, it turned out that some process phenomena could not fully be clarified and understood.

The aim of this paper is to discuss a new developed “Pulse Discriminator (EDM-PD)” used for EDM process analysis and on-line control. The systems' principle is based on continuous gap voltage tracking. Each appearing discharge is analysed, and pulse characteristics are compared with preset values. It enables the discrimination of electric discharges in distinguished pulse types, all having a different impact on the process output parameters as material, removal, electrode wear, pollution of the gap, stability, etc. Further, the EDM-PD tracks pulse trains too. This contribution is focussed on the basic principles of the detection device (EDM-PD). Approaches for metal removal and tool wear evaluation on different material combinations are introduced.

Finally, pulse train detection techniques are treated using the EDM-PD data.

In this case, voltage thresholds are used for pulse discrimination. Since this study focused on the discrimination between normal and abnormal pulses, only this type of discrimination was carried out and more advanced characterisation of the normal pulses (e.g. Ref. [8]) was not covered. This allowed to only use the gap voltage signal for characterizing the discharging process.
