2016, Ecological IndicatorsCitation Excerpt :Beside Hg, large predatory fishes accumulate several anthropogenic and lipophilic compounds, such as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), DDT and its metabolites (p,p′-DDT, p,p′-DDD and p,p′-DDE), and chlordane-related compounds (trans-chlordane, cis-chlordane, trans-nonachlor, cis-nonachlor and oxychlordane). Although these organochlorine compounds have been either banned or restricted their production in most developed nations since 1970s, organochlorines are still found in predatory fishes caught in a number of specific regions of the world's oceans (Kannan et al., 1995; Prudente et al., 1997; Ueno et al., 2002, 2003; Corsolini et al., 2007; Hisamichi et al., 2010). Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) is a pan-tropical species found in all oceans between 40° N and 40° S, and is the most harvested species within the genus Thunnus (Appleyard et al., 2001).

2010, Science of the Total EnvironmentCitation Excerpt :Typically, the ∑ DDT found in marine mammals is less than 100,000 ng/g although concentrations can be in the order of 10–20 times higher (O'Shea, 1999). ∑ DDT values in CHS male dolphins (29,000 ng/g lipid; range 14,900–86,800 ng/g) approach levels found in adult male Risso's dolphins from Japan (mean 43,000 ng/g) (Prudente et al., 1997). All groups of dolphins in CHS and IRL, with the exception of adult females from the IRL, had individuals that are comparable to other delphinoids in areas with reported elevated concentrations (> 15 μg/g lipid or 15,000 ng/g lipid) (Houde et al., 2005a).

2007, Developments in Environmental ScienceCitation Excerpt :According to various investigations conducted so far, PCBs as well as HCHs and HCB are known to have a highly transportable nature through atmosphere, contributing to global pollution. On the other hand, higher levels of DDTs were found in tunas collected from tropical and subtropical open sea waters, while northern tunas showed much lower DDT levels, which is also similar to the pattern found in dolphins and whales (Prudente et al., 1997). As for DRCs, Ueno et al. (2005) found measurable levels of PCDDs only in the samples from coastal waters around Japan and Korea, but very low levels below detection limit were found in samples from open seas (Fig. 18.9), which is similar to DDT distribution (Fig. 18.8).
