Abstract

The aim of this paper is to give an impression of the work of the recently disbanded IUPAC Sub-Committee on the Characterization of Porous Solids. It provides a brief description of the development, content and philosophy of the Recommendations of the Sub-Committee, to be published in Pure and Applied Chemistry. An outline is given of the terminology required to define a porous solid and of the proposed general guidelines for the selection of the most appropriate methods of characterization.

Natural gas sweetening by solvents modified with nanoparticles

Natural gas (NG) as an organic matter is a mixture of hydrocarbon and nonhydrocarbon components, the major part of which is methane, which is a light and flammable hydrocarbon. Besides, it contains CO₂ and H₂S acid gases as well as light hydrocarbons and water. In addition to fulfilling the needs of the market and industry, it is very necessary to remove pollutants and impurities from NG due to the reduction in its heating value and corrosive nature. Different gas sweetening processes that are also called acid gas treating are used based on the quality and quantity of acidic gas pollutants. They included cryogenic distillation, adsorption, membrane separation, and absorption. Nanofluids, which are obtained from the dispersion of nanoscale metallic and nonmetallic particles in a base fluid, are a kind of materials with high ability to transfer heat and mass. The use of nanoparticles increases the productivity and absorption because of the increase in thermal conductivity and fluid mass transfer. In this chapter, a depth review on different methods of NG sweetening, especially on the use of modern nanotechnology in the separation methods to improve and optimize them, is presented.
A new method for evaluating the oil mobility based on the relationship between pore structure and state of oil

An accurate evaluation of the shale oil mobility is crucial to its cost-effective exploitation. This study presents a method to assess shale oil mobility by integrating the pore structure and oil states distributions. First, a set of three discrete organic extracts (EOM-A, B and C) were obtained by sequential extraction. The relationships among the EOMs and the oil states were inferred from the group compositions and fluorescence properties of the produced shale oil (free state). The results showed that EOMs A and B represent free oil in the open and closed pores, respectively, while the EOM-C represents adsorbed oil. Then, NMR T₁-T₂ map is used to determine the T_2-cutoff values that indicate the pore size ranges of different oil states. Free oil resides mainly in larger pore space (T₂ > 0.5 ms), while the adsorbed oil in smaller pore space (0.2 ms < T₂ < 0.5 ms). Finally, the ratio of free to adsorbed oil (F/A) > 0.5 and T_2-cutoff > 1.0 ms suggest that the free oil in connected pores has the highest mobility. This work can provide a reference for evaluating the shale oil potential and prospectivity in other regions.
Microstructural Properties and in vitro Dissolution of Microporous Bioactive 13-93B3 Glass Powders Synthesized via Solution Combustion Synthesis

This study investigates the bioactivity and microstructural properties of borate-based bioactive 13-93B3 glass produced by the solution combustion synthesis (SCS) method using urea and sucrose fuels at different reaction temperatures. The results show these glasses exhibit unique properties compared to conventionally-synthesized borate-based bioactive glasses. The glass particles produced have porous surfaces, with particle sizes below 100 nm. BET measurements reveal that the mesoporous structure of these glasses is characterized by high-specific surface areas, promoting a high ion release and hydroxyapatite layer formation in simulated body fluid (SBF). The crystallization of the amorphous calcium phosphate was investigated by ¹H, ³¹P MAS, and 2D ³¹P{1H} heteronuclear correlation (HETCOR) spectroscopy, showing that it progresses linearly up to three days. The produced glasses were tested for their effects on the viability of 3T3 cells and were found to have no toxic effects. Therefore, the produced glasses are promising candidates for tissue engineering applications.
Hydrothermal processes and simultaneous enzymatic hydrolysis in the production of modified cassava starches with porous-surfaces

The amylolytic action of α-amylase and amyloglucosidase has been directly implemented in native cassava starches for the formation of cassava microporous granules with unsatisfactory results, however, its incidence in hydrothermally treated granules has never been evaluated. The effect of hydrothermal processes and simultaneous enzymatic hydrolysis on the physicochemical, morphological and structural properties of native cassava starch was evaluated. Native cassava starch presented a rigid, smooth surface, and was exempt from porosities, whereas hydrothermal processes altered the semicrystalline order and increasing the size and number of pores and increasing the size (4.11 ± 0.09 nm) and volume of pores (0.82 ± 0.00 cm³/g × 10⁻³). The hydrothermal action followed by enzymatic processes with α-amylase and amyloglucosidase, augmented the processes of internal degradation (endo-erosion) and pore widening (exo-erosion), improving the hydrophilic properties compared to the hydrothermal treatment. Likewise, the hydrothermally process followed by enzymatic hydrolysis for 24 h (HPS + EMS-24) increased the degradation of the amorphous lamellae, consistent with a significant decrease in amylose content. This same dual treatment increased the pore size at 17.68 ± 0.13 nm relative to the native counterpart; therefore, they are considered an effective method in the development of modified cassava starches with porous surfaces.
Improvement of luminescent properties of GdPO<inf>4</inf> doped with optimal europium concentration by Co-doping with lanthanum

Hexagonal gadolinium Phosphate Hydrate doped with different europium amounts (Gd_1-xPO₄:Eu_x·H₂O; x = 0.01, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, and 0.20) was synthesized by hydrothermal synthesis method and the obtained samples were analyzed giving the optimal dopant concentration. Furthermore, gadolinium was additionally replaced by Lanthanum Gd_0.85-yLa_yPO₄:15%Eu (y = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) in hopes of improving luminescence properties even more. This may be possible due to the fact that LaPO₄ exhibits a monoclinic crystal structure, which usually shows better luminescence properties. All of the synthesized compounds were analyzed by X-ray diffraction in order to investigate their crystal structure. SEM analysis was used to characterize the morphology of synthesized particles, while surface area and the pore size of Gd_0.85-xLa_xPO₄:15%Eu samples were measured using Nitrogen adsorption by the BET method and BJH method. The luminescence properties were also characterized and discussed in detail. Lastly, the cytotoxicity study demonstrated that the replacement of gadolinium with lanthanum leads to a reduction in the toxicity of the samples.
The optimization of the adsorption desulfurization process for dibenzothiophene in a model oil using different ratios of hybrid MOF: AC micro adsorbers

Elimination of the release of hazardous sulfur compounds into the environment is imperative, and achieving this requires the desulfurization of petroleum products using an effective method. Adsorption desulfurization is gaining as a cost-effective alternative to various other techniques. In this study, cobalt-based metal-organic framework (Co-MOF) and Hybrid MOF: AC adsorbers were prepared using various ratios through the solvothermal method. The objective was to determine the optimal ratio for maximum removal of dibenzothiophene in a model oil through batch process adsorption. The adsorbers were characterized using FTIR, XRD, FESEM-EDS, and N₂ adsorption-desorption analysis. The results indicated that a ratio of 1:5 MOF: AC achieved a 98% removal (147.57 mg/g) of DBT among (MOF, AC, 1:1 MOF: AC, 1:2 MOF: AC, and 1:10 MOF: AC) due to its optimal number of active sites and surface area. Furthermore, the optimal conditions for maximum DBT adsorption were a dosage of 0.1 g and a contact time of 2 h. The kinetic study of the adsorber showed conformity with a pseudo-first-order model.
