The strength of nanocrystalline metals with and without flaws
Abstract
The expectation of large grain-boundary strengthening and extensive grain-boundary sliding has motivated a number of studies of the mechanical properties of nanocrystalline metals. However, poor sample quality frequently has led to results that are far removed from the actual mechanical behavior of the flaw-free material. Several examples, involving elastic moduli, hardness, and yield strength, are given. Recent tests in compression of high density nanocrystalline metals have shown high hardness and yield strength values that are compatible with extrapolation of coarse-grain Hall-Petch data to the nanocrystalline regime.

Pulsed electrodeposition of homogenous and heterogeneous solid solution layered structure in high strength nanocrystalline Co–Cu alloys
2024, Surface and Coatings TechnologyA supersaturated solid solution nanostructure of an immiscible CoCu system is among the promising nanocrystalline (NC) alloys offering enhanced thermal and mechanical stability. In this paper, experiments were conducted to study the phase transformation and tailoring microstructure from a homogeneous/single-phase to a heterogeneous/dual-phase solid solution layered CoCu nanostructure via pulsed electrochemical deposition (PED). The increasing concentration of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) in electrolyte played a crucial role in stabilizing a homogeneous solid solution CoCu nanostructure. On the other hand, the opposite approach led to the formation of heterogeneous solid solution CoCu alloys in the form of multilayered nanostructure consisting of the primary and secondary solid solution CoCu differing in 10–15 at.% Cu. The separation of primary and secondary phase is more prominent with the extended pulsed periods. The mechanical properties of selected single- and dual-phase alloys were investigated through micro-pillar compression, revealing that a combination of a high yield strength and an elevated strain hardening can be achieved in NC materials through a combined solid solution strengthening and hardening through nano-twin (NT).
Evolution of microstructure and texture in Al-containing CoCrNi medium entropy alloys during severe warm-rolling
2024, Materials CharacterizationAl, as an alloying element, can influence the properties of the single-phase equiatomic CoCrNi MEA. In this study, different alloys of different Al concentrations added to CoCrNi MEA (AlxCoCrNi) were prepared by warm rolling to understand the effect of Al. The alloys were warm-rolled at 400 °C up to an 85% thickness reduction, followed by isochronal annealing at 700–1100 °C. The microstructure after deformation reveals the development of deformation heterogeneities such as shear bands and deformation nano-twins. The evolution of the weak brass component is seen after deformation. Different phases, such as BCC and sigma, evolve upon annealing treatment at different temperatures. The higher Al-content MEA (Al9.09) shows comparatively finer recrystallized microstructure irrespective of the annealing temperatures. Also, weak recrystallization texture develops after annealing, and the deformation texture components lying on α-fiber are preserved. This indicates the absence of preferential nucleation and growth during annealing. The hardness in the as-cast, deformed, and annealed conditions increases with increasing Al content, indicating the influence of Al in the strengthening of the AlxCoCrNi MEAs.
The microstructural origin of a hardness double-peak in an age-hardened EN-AW 6082
2023, Acta MaterialiaIn this study, the origin of a double-peak during artificial aging of an EN-AW 6082 is analyzed with (S)TEM. The acquired TEM data is used as an input into a strength model by Holmedal [1] to explore the origin of the double-peak, thus, a broader strength plateau. It is concluded that the first peak arises after about 160 min at 175 °C from a population of relatively wide -type precipitates with a high number density and a narrow length spread. The second peak occurs after 10 h artificial aging and can be traced to a broader size distribution of precipitate lengths of roughly the same type of precipitates as found for the first peak. The longest precipitates, however, act more efficiently as obstacles for gliding dislocations and maintain therefore the high strength. Those long precipitates are of a hybrid type of different, but mainly overaged phases. It is found that this broad strength plateau with a double-peak can arise after a rapid heat-up to the artificial aging temperature. Due to the rapid heat-up, structures of overaged phases are already found within the precipitates of the first peak making them wider. Ultimately, however, this leads to the evolution of few but very large overaged hybrid-type precipitates co-existing with -type precipitates at the second peak. The mixed morphology counteracts the loss of strength from Ostwald ripening and leads to the second peak. A slower heating rate results in fewer precipitate nucleation sites and in the formation of longer and purer but slimmer phases.
Effects of post heat treatment on microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti5553 parts made by laser powder bed fusion
2023, Journal of Alloys and CompoundsRapid heating and solidification rates involved in additive manufacturing result in non-homogenous microstructural features, microsegregation and residual stresses, leading to deteriorated mechanical properties. Although the rather new Ti-5553 (Ti‐5Al‐5Mo‐5V‐3Cr) metastable β-Ti alloy is printable by laser powder-bed fusion (LPBF), it exhibits poor mechanical strength compared to conventionally forged components due to the lack of second phase strengthening in the as-printed state. Therefore, post-processing heat treatment is essential to enhance the mechanical properties of the printed parts. In this research work, LPBF-made Ti-5553 specimens were subjected to varying heat treatment cycles to modify their corresponding microstructure in terms of the morphology and distribution of α particles. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-Ray diffraction (XRD) patterns, and electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) results suggest that solutionizing at the upper α + β region (800 °C) offers a good combination of finer grain size and satisfactory α dissolution. On aging in the range of 500 – 700 °C for 0.5 – 4 h, growth of α particles with different morphologies was observed. A combination of multiple α morphologies, including Widmanstätten, lenticular, cylindrical and lamellar was identified based on the heat treatment conditions. Consequently, a wide range of microhardness from 300 to 500 HV was observed due to phase transformations in the microstructure, which control the mechanical properties. The subsequent tensile tests validated the improved mechanical properties further as the tensile strength increased from 780 ± 10–1640 ± 6.29 MPa, compared to the as-printed specimens. Examination of the fracture surfaces revealed intergranular failure following aging at 500 °C due to segregation of α particles at grain boundaries. At 600 °C, the fracture was initially intergranular, which slowly transformed to a ductile fracture with time. At 700 °C, the fracture was mainly ductile irrespective of the aging duration.
Heterostructured materials
2023, Progress in Materials ScienceHeterostructured (HS) materials are a new class of materials that are composed of heterogeneous zones with dramatically different (>100 %) mechanical or physical properties. The interactive coupling between these heterogeneous zones produces a synergistic effect in which the integrated property exceeds the prediction by the rule-of-mixtures. HS materials possess superior mechanical or physical properties that are not achievable by their conventional homogenous counterparts. This review focuses primarily on structural HS materials, whose superior mechanical properties are enabled by a new scientific principle: hetero-deformation induced (HDI) strengthening and HDI work hardening. Geometrically necessary dislocations (GNDs) in the soft zones pile up and accumulate near the zone boundaries, producing back stress in the soft zones and forward stress in the hard zones, which collectively produces the HDI stress. HS materials have a unique deformation behavior: formation of dispersive microscopic strain bands, which helps to distribute plastic strain over the whole gauge length, increasing uniform elongation. They can be readily produced using conventional industrial technologies and facilities at large scale and low cost. The superior properties, new materials science and great application potentials are driving the fast development of the HS materials field. This review is meant to introduce students and researchers to this emerging field, and to serve as an authoritative reference on HS materials.
Ultrastrong nanocrystalline binary alloys discovered via high-throughput screening of the CoCr system
2021, Materials and DesignNanocrystalline (nc) alloys are stronger than their coarse-grained versions. Here, we report ultrastrong alloys, discovered via high-throughput screening of the nc CoCr33-69 materials library. The nc materials library was fabricated using magnetron co-sputtering. The alloys consist of textured, columnar structures with grain size in the nanometric regime. We found that the texture and phase composition can be tailored by changing the Cr concentration. In the investigated region of the nc CoCr system, a relatively broad spectrum of yield strength, determined via micropillar compression tests, was found ranging from 1.41 GPa up to 3.64 GPa. The remarkable strength increment was caused by a chemically- and thermally-driven phase and microstructure evolution of the system. The strongest alloys were found in the regions containing the δCoCr phase, which was considered previously as metastable. Density functional calculations revealed that the δCoCr phase is more energetically favourable in Cr-rich regions compared to single-phase simple solid solutions (HCP, BCC). Experimental results showed that the range of its occurrence is wider than previously thought, i.e. after annealing the δCoCr phase was found above 44 at. % of Cr. We demonstrate that systematic screening of materials libraries can boost the discovery of new materials with outstanding properties.
